One of the most popular casino games of luck and skill combined is blackjack. The game is also one of the top three casino classics and has a long history in the gambling world. Blackjack is present ever since the first land based casinos opened; with the improvements in technology and the introduction of the Internet, the game also moved onto the online casino gambling industry. Nowadays, it is even available for play at mobile casinos on the go. Blackjack has a rich history and will continue to be one of the top favorite casino games offline, online and on the go.
Blackjack Origins
Blackjack or 21 has no clear evidence when it first appeared, but experts agree it probably originated around the 1700s in popular French casinos. It was known under the name of Vingt-et-Un which means “21”. The name is probably derived from the popular French card games Chemin de Fer and French Ferme. There was also another version of the game at this time popular in Spain under the name of One and Thirty. The basic rule of the game was to get as close as possible to 31 win a min of 3 cards. Another theory related to the origins of blackjack is that the game was invented by the Romans, as they loved to gamble.
Growth in Popularity
Over time, blackjack had become very popular and it spread to North America via the French colonists. The game soon took over the entire continent. However, the rules of blackjack were a bit different. For example, only the dealer was allowed to double down.
When it became popular in Nevada in 1931, the game of 21 offered special types of bets in order to draw more gamblers into the casinos. For instance, a hand comprised of two black Jacks plus an Ace in spades would play 10 to 1 on the bet of the lucky player. Even though this rule was discontinued later on, the name of blackjack remained.
Blackjack Variations
Blackjack was not created by one person at a definite point of time. Instead, it evolved over centuries. Thanks to the Internet it will continue to evolve and grow. Because of the popularity of the online casino industry, many various forms of blackjack have been developed. Some of them include Double Exposure Blackjack, Spanish 21, Pontoon, Multi-hand Blackjack, European Blackjack, Single Deck Blackjack etc. The variations follow the basic blackjack rules, but with slight difference.
For instance, Pontoon is the British version of American Blackjack, and is distinct from it due to the fact that players are able to see one card before placing their bets, and they can increase their wager amount during the hand. Double exposure blackjack is even more popular, as it offers an even smaller edge for the house and thus increases the players’ odds of winning big. Its difference from standard blackjack is the fact that both of the dealer’s cards are exposed, so you can make a better move. There are some limitations regarding player moves, but the player still has the greatest advantage than in most other variants.
