How to Play Roulette

Roulette is arguably one of the most played casino games with a long-standing tradition dating back to the early beginnings of gambling establishments. In order to play roulette, you need to know a bit more about the actual gameplay and its constituents. A short preview of the types of roulette wheels, the betting area or layout and some useful strategies are sure to help improve your chances of winning at roulette.

The Roulette Wheel

Nowadays, there are two different types of roulette wheels spinning on the casino floors. European casinos make use of one roulette wheel which contains the numbers 0-36 with a house edge of 2.63%. On the other hand, US casinos have slightly altered the look of the wheel so that it has an additional field marked with double zeros 00. Its house edge is calculated at 5.26%.

Connoisseurs of the game are always on the lookout for European roulette, as it basically doubles their chances of success in comparison with the American version.

The Roulette Layout

Another thing you need to comprehend in order to play roulette is the betting area, the roulette layout. It consists of an outside and an inside area, hence there are outside and inside bets, as you will see later on. The inside of the layout contains all the numbers on the wheel, arranged in 3 columns, each containing 12 numbers. The 0 and 00 are placed above these columns. As for the outside part of the layout, there are boxes for the columns, for the bets red/black, odds/evens and different groups of numbers, such as high/low.

Roulette Bets

As mentioned, in roulette there are inside and outside bets, each containing different bet formats. Each inside bet has its specific payout:

  • Straight Up – betting on a single number, pays 35 to 1;
  • Split Bet – betting on two numbers, pays 17 to 1;
  • Street Bet – betting on any three numbers in the same row, with a payout of 11 to 1;
  • Corner Bet – betting on four adjacent numbers, all sharing the same corner, pays 8 to 1;
  • Five Number – a bet on 00, 0, 1, 2 and 3 that pays 6 to 1;
  • Six Number – a bet on 6 numbers in two adjacent rows of three, with the same payout as the previous one.

The outside bets pay out with odds 1:1 or 2:1. The former payout is characteristic for odds/even, red/black and high/low bets, whereas the bets dozen and column pay 2 to 1. Specific number ranges apply for the following bets – high/low depends on two outcomes 1-18 or 19-36, and the dozen bet allows you to bet on one of three groups of 12 numbers 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36.
